Coal mine fire traps at least 36 in east China

A coal mine fire that occurred Wednesday night left at least 36 people trapped underground in east China\’s Shandong Province, according to State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) early Thursday.

An air compression device at a parking lot 225 meters underground caught fire around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, trapping 36 miners working in the area, according to initial investigation.

The mine belongs to Zaozhuang Fangbei Coal Mine Co. Ltd. in Shangdong Province.

An experts team headed by SAWS director Luo Lin rushed to the scene immediately. Rescue operation is going on.

The licensed coal mine is a low gas mine. It had completed technical revamp in June 2010 to expand production capacity to 150,000 tonnes a year. The work passed check of approval in October the same year.

Rain-triggered landslide leaves 18 dead, 2 injured in Shaanxi

Eighteen people were confirmed dead and two others injured in rain-triggered landslide that occurred Monday morning in Lueyang County, Shaanxi Province, rescuers said early Wednesday morning.

Torrential rain hit Lueyang county from 3 a.m. to midday Tuesday, triggering 5,000 cubic meters of landslide to engulf 12 houses in the county seat at 11:15 a.m., according to local authorities.

The local government sent more than 400 people to the spot for rescue operations. Rescuers pulled out 20 people, 17 of whom died on the spot, one died after treatment failed, and two others were injured and are being treated in hospital.

Rescuers have ended search operation early Wednesday morning and the Provincial Highway 309 has been cleared up and traffic is expected to be resumed later in the morning, according to local government sources.

More heavy rains are expected to hit the southern part of Shaanxi in the following 24 hours, the weather forecast said. Local flood control authorities are on high alert and are evacuating people living in low-lying areas and places threatened by possible heavy rains and ensuing mountain torrents.

Farmers gain access to bank card payment services in N. China rural area

A program initiated in April 2009 to give farmers in north Shanxi Province bank card payment access has successfully covered 90 percent of the rural households in the province, according to a bank official.

Now farmers can simply swipe their cards, which have been distributed by the local branches of Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), in a specially designed telephone to transfer money, said Cao Shaoxiong, president of the bank\’s Shanxi branch.

Cao said that as people in rural areas are enjoying a better living standards, they should also be provided with modern forms of payment.

Kou Xiulan, a farmer in the county of Shouyang, has purchased grain from neighboring villages for many years. In harvest seasons, she and her husband would have to pay a large amount of money in cash.

\”Cash is difficult to count, and sometimes there are fake notes, and it\’s also unsafe to keep large amounts at home,\” Kou said. \”Now, a bank card solves all problems.\”

Farmers can also use the card to buy daily necessities in convenience stores or pay for medicine in local clinics.

The bank is planning to issue a total of 100 million cards to rural households throughout the country, which will cover a rural population of around 400 million by the end of the year.

Over 50 million home appliances sold to countryside in 2011

Under a policy to promote the sales of appliances in rural areas, nearly 51 million home appliances were sold in the first half of 2011, with total trade volume amounting to nearly 124.6 billion yuan, according to news from the Ministry of Commerce.

The number sold and the total trade volume saw year-on-year increases of 56.7 percent and 83.7 percent, respectively.

By the end of June, trade volume favored by such policy had reached approximately 366 billion yuan, with 42.5 yuan subsidies distributed.

In June, there were a total of 570,800 home appliances sold in rural areas. Sales volumes in Shandong, Henan and two other provinces exceeded one billion yuan, accounting for 41.8 percent of the total sale. Two SOEs top list of dream employers among grads

Collage graduates line up at the Bank of China booth at a job fair in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. Analysts say that SOEs have become a top choice for many college grads.
Two large State-owned enterprises (SOEs) top the list of most-favored potential employers among university students this year, according to a recent survey by online recruitment company ChinaHR.com.

China Mobile and Bank of China ranked in the top two spots, followed by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) at No 5, in the best employer survey that queried 171,488 students at 764 universities around China.

The survey, the largest of its kind in the nation, found that among the top 50 most desirable employers, 23 are SOEs.

Edward B Lo, executive vice-president of Monster Worldwide Greater China and CEO of ChinaHR.com, told China Daily that since the financial crisis in 2008, SOEs have become a preferred choice among college graduates due to the government\’s policy of minimizing layoffs and increased hiring of new graduates.

Another reason is that \”some of the SOEs are global leaders in their fields – for example ICBC in financial services – and some are major engines driving China\’s economic growth\”, Lo said.

Ma Li, a senior executive in the HR department at China Mobile – which ranked No 1 in the survey for two consecutive years – said the company\’s strength, market performance and brand value are its \”winner\’s cards\”.

Graduates\’ enthusiasm for China Mobile has not faded despite a 2009 order from the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration to reduce benefits and compensation over the following five years.

\”Ever-rising 3G technology will also drive interest to seek a career at China Mobile,\” he said.

But Lo said the desirability of SOEs in the technology sector still lags multinationals.

Topping the tech companies as desired employers were Microsoft, which ranked 4th overall, and Google at 10th.

James Kaw, technical president of the P&G Technical Center, another Top 10 employer, said \”multinationals like P&G offer life-long training and advanced benefits\” so are preferred employers.

This year, 32 percent of survey respondents indicated that multinationals were their top choice.

Insiders note that the controversial high salaries of senior level management at central SOEs is also a key attraction for new graduates.
